Group 0

Car seat, Group 0 seat. Designed for the carriage of a newborn infant. The baby is secured in it with a wide belt, and the head is additional protection. Travelling in such a cradle is possible up to the age of 3-4 months. Many popular manufacturers have abandoned the production of car seats in this category, giving preference to group 0+. The reason for that – numerous crash tests, showing that such a car seat is not safe, and sometimes even dangerous to use. And, as a rule, a child grows out of such a seat in a short time.

Group 0+

Many combination strollers, in common parlance called «3 в 1», are equipped with this type of car seat. They allow a child under 13 kg and up to 1 year old to be carried. These carrycots are used as a mobile baby carrier. If desired, they can be mounted on the stroller chassis wheels. This design is very comfortable for the baby without disturbing his sleep during outings. Install the seat against the motion of the car (with his back to the front) to protect the child’s cervical spine during heavy braking. The baby is fixed in a semi-recumbent position by wide five-point belts. The seat itself is fastened with the Isofix system or the standard seat belts.

Group 1

When your child sits up independently, and his weight exceeds 9 kg – you should switch to a group 1 seat. They are designed for children from one to four years of age. This type of car seats are installed only in the direction of travel of the car, and are fixed in two reclining positions – for sleep and wakefulness. The child is strapped in with the five-point seat belt, or a special table. The baby’s head area is equipped with additional protection against side impact. The seat is secured either with the standard seat belts or the Isofix system.

Group 2

Chairs of this kind are installed only in the path of the car. Suitable for children from 15 to 25 kg. Equipped with rails that allow you to buckle your child with the car’s standard three-point seat belt. There are no inner straps in this group. This type of chair has the ability to adjust the height of the backrest, which allows you to adjust it to the height of the child. Very convenient when you can split the backrest and seat to use the latter as a group 3 seat.

Group 3

Boosters – this is the most common name for a Group 3 seat. They do not have a backrest, but they are equipped with armrests and belt guides. These seats are sold separately or left over from the previous group. They are suitable for children whose weight is between 22 and 36 kg and whose height ranges from 120 cm to 150 cm.

According to the results of crash-tests, the best seats are made by European companies. In particular, you can trust the products Cybex, ROMER, MAXICOSI, Jane, Chicco, Kiddy, Recaro. These seats will provide your baby with maximum safety in case of an accident.

Common mistakes made by buyers

  • You’d be making a mistake if you bought a Group 2 child car seat with the Isofix system, as it can support a maximum weight of 18 kilograms. In this type of chair it will play only a formal role.
  • Think before you buy a used car seat. Despite its outward attractiveness, it may be subject to design flaws that are not visually noticeable. To avoid risking your most precious passenger, buy new seats from stores.
  • You should not save on child safety and buy a budget seat. Cheap Chinese plastic and unreliable mounts can let you down at the most inopportune moment.
