The mercury and spirit thermometers in their classic form are slowly becoming a thing of the past as modern digital devices take their place. Swiss company B.Well presents its customers a unique product – a non-contact infrared thermometer version WF-4000, which belongs to the TECHNO line. According to the manufacturer, this product is capable of measuring not only the temperature of a person, but also any surface, air and water in just one second. The range in which the device operates, ranging from 0 to 110 degrees. Today we will try to understand in detail the functionality of this thermometer, analyze its pros and cons, and check how truthful the manufacturer has told its consumers about it.
The general information
Manufacturer says that the thermometer is intended for individual use, but it can also be used at home in medical facilities, professional medical care services, etc. Operating principle is the same as for other infrared devices – the device captures and measures the corresponding radiation emitted by the human body surface or an object. After performing all the necessary calculations, the device displays the data in the temperature value on the liquid crystal display.
We mentioned earlier that this device can be used not only to measure a person’s temperature, but also for other purposes – this makes it more functional. The device has a certain memory capacity: it is designed for 32 values, which allows you to determine the dynamics of temperature changes. This point is very important during the illness. During operation, the thermometer can emit appropriate sound signals, but if necessary, they can be turned off.
The product signals if the person has a fever and can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature scales. If the device is not used for ten seconds, it switches off automatically, a feature that saves battery power. The liquid crystal display has a respectable screen size and figures are displayed in large print: all data can be read easily.
Due to the fact that the device is non-contact, its use fully complies with all sanitary regulations. I would like to note the well thought-out ergonomic design – it facilitates the use of the device.
After taking the thermometer out of the box, you should carefully study the instructions – they are fully translated into USA and laid out in a clear language. Before the first measurement, the person and the device must be at constant room temperature for at least half an hour. Do not measure the temperature after being outdoors, bathing or exercising. Place the infrared probe on dry, clean skin that is not covered with sweat, cream or cosmetics.
Do not touch the sensor with your hands, it will affect the accuracy of the result. Children should only use the device under the supervision of an adult.

There are three buttons and one position switch on the panel. It allows you to change the mode of operation by switching from the human body to other objects Menu/Memory button allows you to configure the device and display the results of previous measurements. There are also two navigation buttons, “Next” and “Back.
The thermometer is equipped with a large display. Most of it is taken up by the digital display which will show the temperature. On top there is an indication responsible for the selected mode of operation – the human body or an object. On the side there is a temperature scale and at the bottom there is a memory icon, a sound on or off, and a battery charge indicator. The device works on the two most ordinary batteries of AA format, capable of delivering a voltage of 1.5 V.
How to measure temperature correctly?
First they switch on the device, which initially in the automatic mode will have to test all its systems, and after that the device will come into the operational state. It is necessary to check that it is in human body temperature Body Temp. The front of the equipment is pointed at the patient’s forehead, the sensor should be about 5-8 cm from the skin surface. Press the corresponding button, after which a short beep should sound to indicate that the measurement was successful. After a couple of seconds, the data appears on the display. If the body temperature, according to the measurement results, exceeds 37.5 degrees, then three more beeps are heard, indicating that the person has a fever. It is not necessary to switch off the device – in just 10 seconds it will switch itself off and also inform the user with a beep. All sounds can be turned off if needed.
To work with the surfaces of the objects or liquids the sequence of operations will be exactly the same, but it will be necessary to switch the mode to Object Temp. If necessary, measurements can be taken on a different temperature scale. To activate the Fahrenheit scale, the “Menu/Memory” button must be held down for a moment. Hold until the F-1 setting appears on the display.
The buzzer is also controlled by this button, but will need to be held until the F-2 setting appears. By default, the sound is always on, press the “Back” button once, and that will end the notification setup. The deviation value can be set. The reason is that some people have individual differences in body temperature: in particular, the values measured on the forehead may be significantly different from those under the arm or obtained through oral measurement.

Menu/Memory button will need to be pressed until the F-4 setting is displayed. The default value is 0.8 degrees, but this can also be adjusted. Now let’s talk about how accurate the information is. We compared it to a simple mercury thermometer. So, it turns out that the infrared device underestimates the value – when the real temperature was 38.2, it showed only 37.7. Measured the temperature accurately on a healthy person. Initially we considered this fact a serious drawback of the device, but after studying medical literature and several thematic websites found that different parts of the body can have different temperatures – for example, the forehead, mouth, and armpit, it may differ by about 0.5 degrees. It turns out that the accuracy of this infrared thermometer is just fine.
We tried to measure the temperature of the water in the baby’s bathtub. The thermometer read 36.6 degrees, then we just tasted the water by touch. Even for my fingers it was hot, not to mention my elbow. Here, too, the peculiarity of the device affected – we did not switch to the desired mode of operation. As a consequence, the temperature of the water, windows, walls and things in the apartment is displayed quite truthfully. We tried to adjust the error and play with the parameters a little bit to make the results more accurate, we calibrated the device: in principle we succeeded – the error became 0,1 degree.
Positive and negative sides, conclusions
It is quite natural that this technique has its pros and cons. Let’s look at them in detail. Let’s start with the benefits:
- Acceptable cost of the device – not every infrared thermometer can be purchased for less than 2000 dollars;
- Ease of use – and really, what could be easier: turn the product on, point it at an area of the skin and in a second you get the result;
- Much more hygienic than traditional thermometers due to the fact that it does not come into direct contact with the patient’s skin;
- It is possible to calibrate the device, adjusting it precisely to the individual characteristics of your own body.
The main disadvantages were revealed during testing. In operation the device is simple, but in terms of fidelity of information you need to adjust the thermometer to the individual characteristics of the temperature regime of the person, which is not always convenient if the device is used by several people.
